چکیده

Current VLSI technology allows more than two wiring layers and the number is expected to rise in future. In this paper, we show that, by designing VLSI layouts directly for an L-layer model, the layout area for a variety of networks can be reduced by a factor of about L 2 2 compared to the layout area required under a 2-layer model, and the volume and maximum wire length can be reduced by a factor of about L 2, leading to considerably lower cost and/or higher performance. The proposed layouts for k-ary n-cubes, hypercubes, butterfl y networks, cube-connected cycles (CCC), folded hypercubes, generalized hypercubes, k-ary n-cube cluster-c, hierarchical hypercube networks, reduced hypercubes, hierarchical swap networks, and indirect swap networks, are the best layouts reported for these networks thus far and are optimal within a small constant factor under both the Thompson model and the multilayer grid model. All of our layouts are optimally scalable in that we can allow each network node to occupy the largest possible area (e.g., o N L2 for hypercubes) without increasing the leading constant of the layout area, volume, or maximum wire length.

Efficient VLSI Layout of Grid Pyramid Networks

Reducing the VLSI layout area of on-chip networks can result in lower costs and better performance. Those layouts that are more compact can result in shorter wires and therefore the signal propagation through the wires will take place in less time. The grid-pyramid network is a generalized pyramid network based on a general 2D Grid structure (such as mesh, torus, hypermesh or WK-recursive mesh)...

Boundary Element Methods for 3D Capacitance and Substrate Resistance Calculations in Inhomogeneous Media in a VLSI Layout Verification Package

In this paper we describe the application of the Boundary Element Method to the layout verification of VLSI Designs. We describe the methods for the calculation of interconnection capacitances and substrate resistances with the use of problem specific Green’s functions. The derivation of these functions for multilayer structures is presented. Emphasis is on computational efficiency and practica...

Notes on Channel Routing with Knock-Knees

In VLSI layout of interconnection networks, routing two-point nets in some restricted area is one of the central operations. It aims usually to minimize the layout area. Here, we consider connecting (with knock-knees) sets of N inputs and N outputs on the opposite sides of a rectangular channel, where the output order is a given permutation of the order of corresponding inputs. Such channels ar...

Layout optimisation for yield enhancement in on-chip-VLSI/WSI parallel processing - Computers and Digital Techniques [see also IEE Proceedings-Computers and Digital Techniques], IEE

The paper investigates the layout optimisation problem for processor-array networks. If an appropriate shape geometry is selected for the processors, a specific interconnection network can be area-eficiently mapped on a VLSI/WSI chip to maximise the chip yield, operational reliability and circuit performance. A formal technique of cellular layout by polyomino tiles is proposed, with application...
